What a way to spend a vacation! This Adrift Adventures' western adventure combines one day of exciting whitewater rafting in Split Mountain Gorge of the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument and then the next day a two hour horseback ride through ponderosa pines in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Another option is taking the horseback ride after the river trip. Great for first time or experienced rafters and riders, and children 6 years and older.

You begin the whitewater rafting adventure in Dinosaur National Monument about 15 miles from Vernal, Utah. Here the Green River has carved a spectacular canyon through the middle of a giant bulge in the earth's surface, called the Split Mountain Anticline. Over the 9 mile length of this trip we encounter light to medium difficulty (Class III) rapids which make for some great rafting, and they are suitable for first time or experienced rafters. We provide paddle rafts, where you grab a paddle and help maneuver the boat with the aid of a professional guide. Oar powered rafts, where the guide does all the work, are available by request. You receive a hearty lunch on the river. At the end of the river trip we transport you back to your car.

Horseback riding is located about 40 miles away at Red Canyon Lodge and Stables in the cool 7,000 ft. pine-covered slopes of the Uintah Mountains in Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area (you must provide your own transportation). You will be in the same country where outlaws of the wild west traveled and lived. The package includes a guided 2 hour horseback ride through a ponderosa pine forest. The ride does not include meals or beverages but there is a restaurant at the lodge. Overnight accommodations (not included in the trip price) are available at the Red Canyon Lodge and camping is available at nearby Flaming Gorge Reservoir and at Little Hole along the Green River below Flaming Gorge dam. The horseback riding is suitable for all abilities.

COSTS: $112 adult; $98 youth (7-12 yrs). Price does not include sales tax. You can upgrade to a Half Day horseback ride for just $35 additional - includes Lunch !

MEETING PLACE AND TIME

We meet everyone for the river trip at the Adrift Adventures office in Jensen, UT, located 12 miles east of Vernal on US Hwy 40. The store is at the intersection of US Hwy 40 and UT 149 (the turnoff to the Dinosaur Fossil Quarry). MEETING TIME FOR RAFTING IS 8:45 AM . From the store we will transport you to the river put-in, then back to your car at trip's end, around 3:30 p.m. We are required to collect $10/car for Park entrance fees, or show us your park entrance receipt. Adrift Adventures will have already made horseback riding reservations for you in advance, but please call the Red Canyon Lodge (435) 889-3759 to confirm the time of your horseback ride the next day.

You are on your own for dinner and overnight lodging. A convenient and scenic accommodation is the Red Canyon Lodge, since that is where you will be horseback riding the next day.

To get to the Red Canyon Lodge from the Adrift office travel west on US40 to Vernal; turn right on Vernal Ave (US Hwy 191), go 38 miles on US 191 to junction of Utah Hwy 44. Go straight onto Utah Hwy 44 for 3 miles and turn right at the sign that says "Red Canyon Recreation Complex, Red Canyon Lodge", and travel about ½ mile to the Lodge.

The lodge phone number is (435) 889-3759.

RESPONSIBILITY

Adrift Adventures uses only experienced guides and quality boating gear. We have an excellent safety record. Horseback riders are lead by a wrangler/guide. However, all whitewater boating and horseback riding involves certain risks. You participate in these activities at your own risk. We recommend that you be in good health and consider trip

and/or medical insurance. In the interest of safety we reserve the right to postpone trips due to very high or low water conditions, an insufficient number of reservations or inclement weather. In this case your money will be refunded.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING

The following items are suggested for the summer season (June - August), during the spring or fall a sweater is important to bring. The Adrift store has a wide variety of sun protection, river sandals, tie straps for glasses, T-shirts, books, waterproof cameras and other items.

Over the 9 mile length of this trip we encounter light to medium difficulty (Class III) rapids which make for some great rafting. These intermediate rapids are suitable for first time or experienced rafters. Families and children 6 years and older are welcome to join in the fun. We are the only company in DNM to offer the excitement of paddle rafts, where you grab a paddle and help maneuver the boat with the aid of a professional guide. This is by far our most popular mode because you participate in the action and no previous experience is needed. We also offer oar rafts (where the guide does all rowing) by request.

WE PROVIDE A HEARTY LUNCH, beverage and all river rafting related equipment. Children's age limit is 7 years. Weather in the summer boating season is generally sunny and hot with highs in 80's or 90's, but you should be prepared for infrequent brief rainshowers.
